The Battle of Algiers

Check out the newest edition to the LikeTelevision movie library – The Battle of Algiers, one of the best war movies ever made. The documentary takes an unbiased look at the confrontation between the French and Islamic Terrorists for the fight for Algeria’s independence. How that for irony??? It is a great film… watch it!

Excellent piece. very well done–looks like a documentary, but isn’t. If you know the subsequent history of Algeria, you’ll find they ended up with the same kind of radical Islam nation that Iran ended up with–all that work and they ended up worse (?) than under the colonial French rule. Nice work of putting it together, guys

    Ran across this by accident.

I am afraid you don’t know your history at all.

The Algerian government, to date, is *not* an Islamic government. The FLN and its post independence factions were all quasi-Socialist secular movements which made some appeal to national religious sentiments where they thought necessary, but always pursued a secular government.

Indeed your comment gets the history ass backwards, for in fact the Generals who are known as “le Pouvoir” in Algeria annuled free elections when an Islamic radical movement known as the FIS (front islamique du salut) looked to win.

As to ending up worse off, well, that is something begging the question. The period 1962-1975, roughly a decade after independence, well very well. However corruption and other issues set in -socialist model of development.

However given the demographics and the like, there is no way that the French would have been able to continue to hold the Algerians – it was not a colony at all, it was a department of France. You would have have a mini-religiously based apartheid.
