ScreamFest - 2004

October 28, 2004

In case you never clicked on the witch flying in the upper right corner of your browser - here’s a link to the special Halloween section of LikeTelevision. Make sure you check out the free promo trailer - rehashed from an insane show in 2000…. followed by tons of video trailers made in house with Frank Random.

Another idea - search for horror - and you get dozens and dozens of choices. And speaking of horror - The painting above of course comes from Edvard Munch’s The Scream. The other panel is from a product called Whiz, which is something tasty to eat. Just added to the tv commercial library - an offer to send off for some magic trick secrets when you send in wrappers of Beich Whiz, a sweet treat of peanuts, marshmellows and fudge covered in a dark chocolate shell layer. Yum. Enjoy the ScreamFest - and this tasty snack treat, and don’t forget to send your wrappers to Chicago to redeem the magic tricks offer.

Fresh from France -Dauphine

October 27, 2004

This car was way ahead of its time - fresh from France, the Renault Dauphine. Perky little thing, you’ll love how it passes a bunch of cars and parks like a champ.

And tomorrow, October 28th - in 1886 - the Statue of Liberty was dedicated. A mere one hundred and eighteen years ago. If you like, let Ed tell you about it.

If you need more media files related to France - try here, here, here or here .

Corvair - bummer, great car

October 25, 2004

In 1959 - Ralph Nader writes a story about the dangers on the Corvair in his book, unsafe at any speed. While it was a great car - in truth, not much safer or unsafer for cars in that day and age. Anyway - this infommercial looks like Chevy’s response to the criticism.

Spivey’s Birthday, new stuff

October 21, 2004

Another year just creeps up on you.. and BOOM - it’s your birthday. And Oct 21 is Brad Spivey’s birthday. Spivey is the acclaimed character actor in countless commercials. Check him out here is the Urinal Screen. Also check the interview in Zim Zum, episode six. Also of note - the MIT interactive game post. Spivey is also a world class designer of high end media database applications delivered over IP networks. Yep, Spivey designed LikeTelevision’s media library. Happy Birthday Brad Spivey!

Also - here’s a few new nuggets just out of the gate… new age, old school & funky - a LikeTelevision commercial. And after that - have at look at the collection of 1960 Ford Automobiles.

Currently working on a Jodie Foster movie… coming soon.

New Content -Drinkin’ & Drivin’

October 18, 2004

In case you are looking for something out of the ordinary… please check out this flamenco dancing, parachute dropping, ice cold Colt 45 malt liquor ad from back in the day. For those of wanting an answer to the burning question - when does beer become a malt liquor. Well… i think the answer is when the alcohol content rises above 3.99% by weight (not volume)… since in California, any beverage over 3.99% alcohol by weight CANNOT be called beer. For comparison… a 3.2 beer (by weight) is about 4% alcohol by volume. But enough of this - i will leave all these fractions and measures to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. But if you want to see a classic Colt 45 from the past - check this one… or this one.

Also of interest - you might remember this song somewhere in the back of your… Come with me Lucille, in my merry oldsmobile - which dates back to 1905… and featured here in a long form commercial from the early 1930s featuring the animation skills of Max and Dave Fleischer, creators of Popeye, Betty Boop, and Superman. As you probably know - Oldsmobile was phased out by GM - a few years ago… so, check out this old 6 minute cartoon commercial in honor to your daddy’s big fat car with massive fins… (my dad had a Ninety Eight from the 1970s that really defined the auto term -boat).

New Halloween Look

October 12, 2004

For whatever reason - we just love halloween, so the nerds at LTi got together and came up with this funky new look for the site. No real reason for the change other than - why not?, it will be up for just a few weeks. If you like it great… if not, fear not it will be gone before you know it.

Each Halloween, we feature a special listing of the best Halloween realted content - be it Zombies, Ghosts, Horror, bloody, Scary, or in some way related to Halloween…. you can find enough content here at LikeTelevision to watch till your eyeballs fall out. Check out the free promo clip for the Halloween ScreamFest…. the clip was made in 2000 - but we recycle it every year cause it is just so darn weird.

You can click here to see a partial listing of the Best Of titles… (or just click on the witch on the top right corner). Also - don’t miss the very slick surf music spooky playlist from The Aqualads - Haunted Beach, El Spectre, Night of the Gremmies and more! And in case you want to farther out in left field - by all means, check out Unknown Hinson!

10/08/1967 - Che Guevera is dead

October 8, 2004

On Oct. 8, 1967 - it was reported that Che Guevara had been fatally wounded in battle, fighting with peasant revolutionaries trying to take control of Bolivia. Shortly thereafter… it was reported he was executed by U.S. trained Bolivian soldiers in a one-room schoolhouse near Vallegrande, Bolivia on Oct. 9, 1967. Rumors swirled and the body was never delivered…. though they did supposedly cut off Che’s hands… to get a bona fide fingerprint ID.

Many years later in July 1997, Che Guevara’s body was found in in a mass grave near Vallegrande and reburied in Santa Clara, Cuba. In an odd twist of fate…. Vallegrande has become a leading merchant of Che Guevara posters, t-shirts, etc. etc…. so it looks like the capitalists had more staying power than the communists. When I was in college, my roommate had a poster of Che that graced our walls. As I got older, and learned more about the Castro regime in Cuba that brutally oppressed the good people - Che became less of a hero… and started to look more like a terrorist. To this day, Che Guevara remains a hero to many on the “left” side of politics. I think they should talk to some folks who lived in Cuba at the time… as they will hear a different story. Che Guevara is still a hero to some folks but his legend as a glamourous revolutionary has faded with time. As is often the case, the guy who claims he wants to be protect the people is often the guy who realy wants to weild power over the people and force his beliefs on them. If given the choice - I think I would prefer McDonald’s french fries and an ice cold coke over communist tyranny. Che’s life reminds me of John Steinbeck’s line - The best laid plans of mice and men go oft awry. And in case you didn’t know - Steinbeck got this line from a Robert Burns poem - To A Mouse, On Turning Her Up In Her Nest With The Plough - which contained the phrase - The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley. Another line comes to mind that sums up Che Guevara’s legacy -”One man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter.” Make sure you check out news clip for October 8th - This Day in History, which features an item on Che’s death. Ironies abound with today’s political tensions (see Che address the United Nations - HA!). - or as Mark Twain used to say - History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme.

SpaceShipOne, X Prize and Sputnik

October 4, 2004

SpaceShip One Wins the X Prize, October 4, 2004. As you know - October 4th was already a big day in Space History - in 1957 the Soviets launched Sputnik - the world’s first foray into space travel. Check out this special preview - with the newsreel of Sputnik, a commercial for Major Matt Mason, and a cool Chuck Yeager clip from the X-1 days. Our hats off to Burt Ruton and the crew at Scaled Composites for pulling off this remarkable feat - and capturing the X Prize of $10 million dollars. Congratulations to all the folks who made it happen. Thank you for letting me celebrate your triumph by proxy. YES! And why not search for astronaut or spaceship. And who could forget - Venus Bound. Or go back to the very beginning of flight - watch Conquest of the Air.
