Gay Bob Quits The Cloris?

February 26, 2004

Given the recent headlines about the legality and sanctity of gay marriage (civil disobedience in San Francisco, Bush proposes constitutional amendment, and just in… Rosie O’Donnell is planning to tie the same-sex union knot)… well, the irony of story behind a movie called Thursday’s Game is pretty funny. You see…. this is a Hollywood buddy movie, starring Gene Wilder and Bob Newhart - and a remarkable collection of entertainment heavyweights. Bob Newhart is loooking to get out of his marriage with Cloris Leachman… and he has the perfect plan… he will tell her that - deep down… he is really gay. The scene where he breaks the news to his wife in a restaurant… so she won’t make a scene… is painfully funny. The movie also stars Ellen Burstyn, Rob Reiner, Valerie Harper, Norman Fell, Nancy Walker, and Chris Sarandon, brother of Susan Sarandon.

For those old enough to remember…. I used the phrase “Gay Bob” … because it reminded me of a bizarre gift featured one Christmas… way back in the 70s i think? Anyway… it was the “Gay Bob Doll” … and by gosh… it looks like some are still available. It will run you though… but, you can get a picture of the doll.. for free.

Need more? Check out episode one of Zim Zum - featuring the first openly gay rap duo - Lite ‘n Lively, performing their smash hit - Go Gay! (caution: this clip contains harsh language… as the manager promises the boys to get them some beer). Watch the whole episode… it is outta control.

Things you might have missed

February 25, 2004

Indeed…. it is hard keeping track of all the stuff we have here at LikeTelevision, but in our never ending quest to be…. LikeTelevision, let me throw a few pearls out for your video pleasure. First off, a real classic 50s B sci-fi thriller called Killers from Space, starring Peter Graves of Mission Impossible fame, now seen on History channel’s Biography series. Okay… not in the mood for some tesla coil fluff and guys with ping pong ball eyes… let’s say you want something more timeless. Well by all means check out Jean Renoir’s Rules of The Game, a funny romantic comedy about human nature, love and our desires. Okay… so let’s say you don’t have enough time for a movie - well then, check out Gerald McBoing Boing’s Symphony… a ridiculous cartoon that you just must see.

Joseph Cracker?

February 23, 2004

funny previews for a show called “Night Court”, … as the election year heats up, it only gets funnier. Joesph Cracker kills me. Anyway - the show is really worth checking out, just to reflect on the common sense toughness of loveable Judge Jay. And while all the previews are terrific, check out these.

1) Tough on Conservatives

2) Tough on Radicals

3) Tough on Immigrant Smokers

There’s a bunch more if you like these previews, plus make sure you that you check out the actual show, Night Court, USA… funky!!!!

Ready to Rock - Ugetsu

February 16, 2004

First things first… my apologies for not having this film ready by Friday. There is no good excuse…. and i could offer an explanation… but it would be lame. Basically… got we pushed behind schedule due to the loading of the new servers…. yeehaw! what a chore that job is…. but i digress.

My guess is that most of you have not seen Ugetsu and that’s fine… because you are in for a real treat - this is a wonderful film. As is often the case with Japanese films - the cinematography is nothing short of glorious, and the plot is compelling and as timeless as Shakespeare. By all means - find some time in your busy day, and watch this film. Since it is “on” all the time… that shouldn’t be too hard. And better still… get the MPEG files, as they are of much higher quality than the streams.

Kim Novak - Happy BDAY!

February 13, 2004

On February 13, 1933 - Kim Novak, one of the most talented and beautiful actresses EVER…. was born in Chicago, Il. Her most reknowned film is probably Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, where she played the temptress who lured Jimmy Stewart into that crazy staircase scene (which clearly gives homage to Orson Wells… and his wild staircase scene in the Third Man - watch preview).

Personally - my favorite Kim Novak film is Otto Preminger’s classic, Man with the Golden Arm, starring Frank Sinatra, Darren McGavin, and Eleanor Parker. It’s a really great movie- and you gotta love the preview, made by Frank Random, one of LikeTelevision’s top talents.

Ugetsu … very cool classic

February 11, 2004

Yipee… Ugetsu is not only to tape… it has been encoded for the download files, and the streams are getting squished as i write this… woo woo. If you folks only knew how much work Frank put into tweaking subtitles…. well darn it, you’d be grateful. If all goes according to plan - Ugetsu will be posted sometime Friday in time for the weekend.

This was a really cool movie- a great story line, about a theme oftened used in Japanese cinema - ambition, money and power at the expense of those you love. Tragic, yet somehow heroic in the triumph of the spirit after the mightly have been humbled. Just search for Ugetsu - it will come up when it’s ready to roll.

Bonanza Guest Star Bonanza

February 10, 2004

Way back in the day, Bonanza was a cool show - because it was broadcast in color, a huge deal at one time when I was just a kid. And of course - each week you’d get some cool guest stars, like you got in The Twilight Zone. Anyway - here’s some of my favorite Guest Stars on Bonanza episodes. 1) The Ape w/ Leonard Nimoy. 2) San Francisco w/ Richard Deacon and David White 3) The Avenger w/ Vic Morrow 4) Silent Thunder w/ Stella Stevens 5) Day of Reckoning w/ Ricardo Montalban as an Indian?

Drive-In Media Clips

February 6, 2004

Back in the last millenium, people sometimes went to Drive-In Theaters, where you could park your car, hook the speaker to the window, and watch a movie in your Ford or Chevy. It was a lot of fun, wonder why it faded away, who knows?
Anyway - what media comes up on a search for Drive-in? Well, a movie so bad it is remarkable - called Drive-In Massacre - check out the free preview. And also, a clip from reknowned toymaker, Kenner - with their offering called Movieland Drive-In. And finally, an news reel clip of the first Drive-In theater that opened June 6th, 1933 in Camden, NJ.
