Remebering Bob Hope

July 29, 2003

On Sunday – America lost one of the greats as Bob Hope died at the age of 100. He was born in England on May 29, 1903 – and was an icon of the stage, film and TV for most of the 20th century. In contrast to many of today’s entertainers, Bob gave his heartfelt support of US soldiers both at home and abroad. Check out this clip from World War II – where Bob sings his trademark piece – Thanks for the memories to US soldiers during a Command Performance radio broadcast from the early 1940s. Or – if you want to see one of Bob’s best movies – check out – My Favorite Brunette, starring Bob and one of his best co-stars, Dorothy Lamour. Thanks for all the great memories Bob – we will certainly miss your comedic wit and charm, but mostly your warm and generous heart.

100 years ago today

On July 23, 1903 – one hundred years ago today… Henry Ford sells his first model. At this time – no SUVs were offered for sale.

Next Up – Bardot in St. Tropez

July 21, 2003

Coming next – Brigitte Bardot stars in the film that rocked the world – And God Created Woman, or Et Dieu… créa la femme – if you prefer the orignal French title. And when He made Brigitte Bardot – Oh my! This film features a young 22 year old Brigitte Bardot, (circa 1956 – in glorious color), looking for love in the sweltering French beaches of St. Tropez. Suffice it say – the film is a classic in steamy, but cleaner than most sitcoms of today. My guess is – you’ll like it. Also of note – this film inspired Prince (a.k.a. the symbol man dude) to write a great song of the same name. Check out the preview for a sneak peak of what’s coming next to the LikeTelevision library.

W.M.D. Follow-up

July 17, 2003

Weapons of Mass Destruction – check this out! For our daily followers of the LTi Blog – you remember that yesterday was the birthday of the first nuclear bomb detonation in Los Alamos, NM. (read more). Well… one of our members pointed us to this hillarious “easter egg” at Google. Give it a try… it’s worth the minute of time.

1) Go to Google.com
2) type in (but don’t hit return): “weapons of mass destruction”
3) Hit the “I’m feeling lucky” button, instead of the normal “Google
search” button
4) read the error message carefully … and LAUGH!!! Funny guys, those pointy heads!

Have a great day…. still working on Brigiitte Bardot in – And God Created Woman… our next movie offering. A real scorcher in St Tropez!

Happy Birthday -W.M.D.

July 16, 2003

July 16th, 1945 – the first atomic bomb – a.k.a. W.M.D. varietas nuclearis, was detonated in the desert near Los Alamos, N.M. USA. As you can see from the video – this little package packs quite a wallop… so be careful when you blow out the candles. Or as Alanis Morrissette might say – Isn’t it ironic? Just a little fly in your chardonnay. May we all pray for peace … good will towards all men… and woman and children first.

His Girl Friday

July 15, 2003

One of the greats – Howard Hawks directed His Girl Friday, a romantic comedy starring Carey Grant and Rosiland Russell. The setting is an old school newspaper office.. you know, back in the day when newspapers were a big deal… way before the internet and computers. Back then… the newspapers companies yeilded great power and the ability to influence… in the same way Orson Welles was in Citizen Kane…. only these characters “act nice”.. using the paper for the good guys. The little guy… etc. etc … and of course…. they fall in love. Ralph Bellamy plays the guy Rosiland Russell dumps for Cary Grant. Bellamy is hilliarously convincing as a stiff life insurance salesman who gets dumped. You probably recognize Ralph Bellamy from Trading Places with Eddie Murphy, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Dan Ackroyd. Ralph Bellamy plays one of the super rich Duke Brothers, the other was Don Ameche. In short – His Girl Friday is a really cool movie… check it out – or watch it again.

Graham Greene’s The Third Man

July 13, 2003

Based on Graham Greene’s story – The Third Man is really creepy dark film, that offers some of most amazing zither music ever played. Anton Karas is the Jimi Hendrix of zither noodleing. A remarkable player! Orson Welles stars as Harry Lime – a slimeball in post wwII, who sells blackmarket medicines to desparate hospitals and doctors and gets murdered… or does he? Joseph Cotten plays Holly Martins plays an down and out American writer, Trevor Howard is perfect as the British Major, and for the big female star – we are introduced to Valli, who plays Anna Schmidt. She is really beautiful – and has that Eastern European soft melancholy pout down pat. The movie is well written, great pacing, A+ for cinematography (especially cool – the stairway sequence, which certainly inspired Hitchcock in his inspiring stairway sequence in Vertigo. The Third Man is one of my favorite movies on the site.
